Food Safety

Don't let the tummy bugs get you down this summer and be food smart by following the 4cs.

Make sure your hands are clean by properly washing them with soap and then drying them with a clean paper towel. Make it a habbit to always ensure your hands are clean before handling food, after going to the toilet, gardening, playing in the sand etc.  All utensils should always be clean before using.

Make sure all food are handled properly by following the steps provided by the New Zealand Food and Safety Authority.
  • Defrost frozen foods thoroughly before cooking.
  • Never leave hot food to cool for more than two hours before putting it in the fridge. Keep foods covered.
  • Reheat leftovers until steaming hot throughout and do not reheat more than once.
  • Cook minced meat and sausages thoroughly (meat should not be pink) and cook poultry until juices run clear.
  • Pre-cook minced meat, sausages and poultry before barbecuing.
  • Do not put cooked meat back on the same plate that held raw meat.

Cover all food before and after preparation.

Ensure your fridge is between 2 and 4 degrees centigrade. Keep all perishable foods in the fridge until you are ready to use them.
